Leaked Trump Memo on Endangered Species Act

Last month, aTrump administration memo was leaked to the Center for Biological Diversity. In it, the Fish and Wildlife Service directs its staff to limit the information released to the public for decisions regarding species protected under the Endangered Species Act. Records to be withheld include drafts of policies and rules, briefing documents, and meeting notes.

The memo also directs the Fish and Wildlife to withhold science and the advice of dissenting wildlife scientists from the public, a violation of the Freedom of Information Act.

The memo makes it abundantly clear that the Trump administration is willing to ignore science and the law in pursuit of its anti-wildlife agenda. If the memo’s directions are followed, it will be more difficult to legally challenge agency actions that harm imperiled wildlife, and could result in more extinctions.
