Endangered Species Act Rollbacks

The Endangered Species Act is one of the most effective environmental laws ever enacted. 99% of species protected under the Endangered Species Act have not gone extinct in the forty years that the Act has been Law, including gray wolves, bald eagles, grizzly bears, Florida manatees, whooping cranes, and killer whales.

However, on August 12 2019, the Trump administration finalized dramatic rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act. These rollbacks permit actions that would lead to the eventual demise of a protected species provided each step is sufficiently modest. This effectively creates a loophole that exempts activities that could harm species by say, hastening climate change.
